Getting Started

Assignments
Departments contact our office when there is a need for temporary office support. The requests are for all levels and abilities with varying schedules. The SOS Placement Coordinator will contact you when we receive a request for which you are qualified. We will let you know the details of the assignment. You have the right to accept or refuse the assignment. If you accept, it is imperative to work the assignment for the length of time requested. Remember that the departments need you because of a job vacancy or work excess. As with any temporary staffing agency, there is never any guarantee for employment.

Confidentiality
As an SOS employee, you will be assigned to offices throughout the University. You may be exposed to records and files that are not intended for general public knowledge. Under no circumstances is this information to be revealed to anyone unless instructed by your supervisor. These records pertain to real people. Please treat this information with the respect it deserves, and never discuss with anyone.

Attendance

Be there! Be on Time! Always! Attendance and punctuality are important at the University. Every employee is expected to work when scheduled and to arrive on time. After you report at your new assignment, please check in with the SOS office to let us know you arrived safely. On the occasions when you must be absent or tardy due to unavoidable circumstances, please call the department you are assigned to as well as the SOS office. If you are unsure of the supervisor's phone number, call 882-4141 (hospital operator) or 882-2121 (campus operator) and they will connect you with your assigned office. Please schedule any appointments or interviews around your breaks. Excessive absences and tardiness will not be tolerated, and are grounds for dismissal.

Attire
Employees are expected to dress appropriately for an office setting at the University. Follow these guidelines:

  • Dress business professional the first day of your assignment.

  • Ask the supervisor at your assignment about the dress code within their office.

  • Extremely casual sportswear (blue jeans), is not considered appropriate for work in most locations.

  • Supervision
The SOS Coordinator will provide you with general information about your assignment. You will be given the address and name of the person to whom you report. When you arrive on assignment, your contact will provide you with information regarding specific training and performance expectations. You are expected to adhere to departmental policies and procedures at all times. When in doubt, ASK!

    Scheduling
Good communication with the SOS office is essential. We assume that you are reporting to work as scheduled unless we hear differently.
    Contact the SOS office if:
  • Your assignment is ending and you are ready for another.

  • You need time off from work for any reason.

  • You are leaving our employment.
  • When possible, please schedule personal appointments between assignments. If you do have to take time off, letting SOS know, allows us the opportunity to make alternate arrangements for the department.

    Personal Communications
SOS discourages the use of personal communication devices on the job. If you carry a pager, please make sure it is on silent alarm. If you own a wireless phone, do not use it during work time. While internet access is available in most departments, the University does not permit personal use of those resources.

    Evaluations
SOS is very concerned with quality service. Throughout your assignment we will monitor your performance and attendance. SOS asks for feedback from the department supervisors to evaluate your performance and our service delivery. The information on the evaluation will be shared with you as appropriate and will help us to determine if additional training is needed or if any other issues need to be addressed.

In addition, you will be given the opportunity to evaluate your experiences on the assignment. On the back of each time sheet is an evaluation form. Please take a moment to complete, as these evaluations will be used to assist with future placement to that department. Your honesty and cooperation is appreciated and your comments and feedback are held in the strictest of confidence.

    Transfers and Resignations
According to University policy (HR118), if you wish to resign in good standing, two weeks notice is required.

  • Call SOS to submit your notice

  • Turn in final time cards

  • Return parking permit

  • File a change of address (if you are transferring)

  • Notify Payroll office (if you are relocating)
